Junk from Jeff - Cars

May 2004

Jeff Dayss

How can we love them and hate them so much? Americans love automobiles, but we also love bikes. We have almost as many bikes in the garages as cars at one time or another. 80% of all Americans ride a bike.

Now that riding season is here, let me address the subject of autos. I know a lot of people are terrified to ride on our streets and I'm sure that's why many people stick to mountain biking when trails are available. After all, it's just one less obstacle to avoid.

I've read many an article on this subject and agree with a few of their theories. To start with, treat people the way you want to be treated, whether it be a walker, jogger or a motorist. If the roads are busy, ride single file. Even though the law says it's legal to ride two abreast, it's still safer and courteous to ride single file. The trick is not to impede the flow of traffic. The last thing you want to do is provoke an already stressed out motorist. You have to remember you are in his way! and he's always in a hurry and be warned that he probably weighs about two tons.

At this point I'm going to start a long dragged out lecture, and at this point I'm supposed to change your whole outlook on life and cars in general. I've seen many a rider provoke a bad situation by yelling or making a gesture. If you want to add to the many problems of life, pursue this line of attack, because I can guarantee this will add years of misery to your bike riding. Personally speaking, I've got too many problems and I don't need one more.

Another theory I have, and many may not agree, but I think it's a documented fact that as soon as a man or woman gets behind the wheel of a car, his or her testosterone level rises which combines with normal stress, and the sudden urge to be in a hurry, whether it be to get to work, home or supper can be deadly.

So when someone blasts that horn, just wave him or her around and give them a big smile. And, lastly, from my old quotes and sayings, you may want to etch this in your memory. Bumper Stickers and Battles may break your bones, but horns will never hurt you. (I think that's how it's supposed to go.)
